The Castle Pöggstall (also lock Rogendorf or Castle Roggendorf called) is a former moated castle in Lower Austria's Waldviertel .

history

The massive building in the center of the market town of the same name, Pöggstall , dates back to the 13th century. An expansion took place under Kaspar von Roggendorf at the end of the 15th century. The castle belonged to the mighty Maissauer for a long time . From 1795 to 1919 it was owned by the family fund, which had been set up to provide the family members of Empress Maria Theresia and Emperor Joseph II with part of the assets of Emperor Franz I. The nearby castles of Persenbeug, Artstetten, Leiben and Luberegg formed the so-called "Habsburgerland". In 1919 the fund was expropriated in favor of the Republic of Austria and the property was transferred to the war victims fund. In 1986 it was purchased by the municipality of Pöggstall and is used for museum and cultural purposes.

The castle in the present

  • Museum of Legal History : Since 1988 the castle has housed the 'Museum of Legal History', which essentially comprises the objects of a collection that the lawyer Hans Liebl (October 15, 1877 - May 16, 1950) put together and finally bequeathed to the Lower Austrian State Museum . The show was first shown from 1918 in the Lower Austrian Provincial Museum, which was then still located in Vienna, and moved to Greillenstein Castle in 1967 for reasons of space . After the Greillenstein castle owner had terminated the lease, the collection found its current location in 1988 at Pöggstall Castle. The decisive factor in choosing Pöggstall Castle was the fact that it is also the location of the only original torture chamber in Austria. This dates from the year 1593. The Museum of Legal History was reopened in 2011 after a renovation.
Castle and Barbican

In addition, the castle houses:

  • The market town of Pöggstall - from 2018
  • Showroom about the Rogendorfer family (lords of the castle from 1478 to 1601)

Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2017

In April 2014, Schloss Pöggstall was announced as the only exhibition venue for the Lower Austrian State Exhibition 2017 with the working title Alles was Recht ist . (According to Heldenberg (2005), however, the state exhibitions were divided into several locations.) Around € 9 million are earmarked for renovation and infrastructure measures, such as parking spaces on the outskirts. Even before the groundbreaking ceremony at the beginning of November 2015, some discoveries were made during archaeological investigations and excavations: 500 years of wall paintings, a Gothic hall that was later divided into 7 rooms, a stone cannonball and a 4 m deep outlet. The 500 year old facade is being preserved with modern restoration methods. An arcade with Renaissance elements faces the inner courtyard.
