Kaspar I. von Roggendorf (also: von Rogendorf or Roggendorfer ; * 15th century ; † 1506 ) was councilor and treasurer of Emperor Friedrich III. (ruled 1452–93) and served him as a military leader in the fight against the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus (ruled 1458–90). Because of his merits he was raised to the baron status and from 1501 was a member of the regiment (= government) of the "Lower Austrian" states.

Life

Kaspar von Roggendorf came from the Styrian knight family of Roggendorf , who had lived in Austria under the Enns , as Lower Austria was then called, since the middle of the 15th century . He began his ascent as administrator of various tolls and a warrior of Emperor Friedrich III. Kaspar made a quick career and held numerous offices, so that he could acquire extensive reigns and achieve great wealth. His family soon assumed an almost princely position in the western Waldviertel , although they had only been raised to the rank of baron.

Kaspar von Roggendorf had been a treasurer since around 1475, in 1477 he became an imperial steward , and in 1479 caretaker of the prince's castle in Werfenstein . He had already acquired the rulership of Rosenburg am Kamp in 1475 (which he sold to the brothers Jakob and Christoph Grabner in 1487 ), Pöggstall followed in 1478, Ottenschlag in 1479 and 1480, the year in which he and his brother Balthasar were raised to the baron status was, the rule of Weitenegg .

In 1484 Kaspar von Roggendorf was one of the army leaders of Emperor Friedrich III. in the battle of Leitzersdorf , which ended with the defeat of the imperial army against the troops of the Hungarian king. After Friedrich III. had died, Roggendorf, who was an accomplished financial expert, also served his son Maximilian I (king since 1486; emperor since 1508), by whom he was ordered to the newly established aristocratic accounting chambers. In the last five years of his life he was also a member of the regiment of the “Lower Austrian” regional group.

Of Roggendorf's sons Wilhelm (1481–1541), Georg and Wolfgang, the first named in particular gained prominence as an imperial military leader and - alongside Count Niklas Salm (1459–1530) - defender of Vienna during the Turkish siege of 1529 .

Remarks

  1. In the course of the imperial reform under Maximilian I , the "Lower Austrian" group of states was formed from Austria under the Enns , as Lower Austria was called at that time, Austria ob der Enns , today's Upper Austria , Styria , Carinthia and Krain , which in turn belonged to the Austrian Empire .
