Ottenschlag Castle

The Ottenschlag Castle is in a slightly elevated position on the north side of the square in the market town of Ottenschlag in the district of Zwettl in Lower Austria . The castle is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The former moated castle was founded in 1523 under Wolfgang von Rogendorf . The initially four-sided complex was built around a medieval castle , a castle that existed until the 18th century.

There was a frequent change of ownership. From 1596 to 1666 the Barons von Polheim , in the 18th century the Counts of Herberstein , in the 19th century the Counts of Falkenhayn .

In 1904 the industrialist Munk changed its use as a factory. From 1931 onwards, in possession of the Göttweig monastery , the castle went to the state of Lower Austria in 1986. Since 1992 the castle has been used by a three-year college for rural business and household management with a focus on tourism & event management and as an educational center.

Exterior

The regular, horseshoe-shaped, two-storey complex has three massive round corner towers under tent roofs . In the east, the inner courtyard is closed by a stone wall. Access is from the south by a pilasterflankiertes Renaissance - Portal with the entries in 1554 formerly a drawbridge . The portal shows mannerist tendril reliefs with grotesques and coats of arms. The entrance has a stitch cap barrel vault with stucco ridges . The south wing has Gothic chamfered rectangular windows. The west wing has walled-in arcades on the ground floor . The courtyard facades are from the first half of the 19th century.

Interior

In the south tower is the oldest vault as an eight-part cell vault with a star-shaped keystone. There is a mighty barrel-vaulted cellar in the south wing. In the west wing there are groin vaults and on the courtyard side a square vaulted formerly open corridor and a shoulder arch portal from the first half of the 15th century.
