The residential and commercial building at Hansemannstrasse 2 in Cologne-Ehrenfeld was a building built around 1870 and an example of the early development of Ehrenfeld before it was incorporated as a district of Cologne. It had been a listed building since March 6, 1992 and entered the list of monuments under the number 6410. In May 2018, the vaulted cellar of the house sagged several centimeters during construction work in the neighboring property; it was damaged so badly and its stability was impaired that it was demolished and carried out in spring 2019.

Building description

The three-axle residential and commercial building was built around 1870 with two floors. The house sign on the late classicistic stucco facade on the first floor was added around 1905 and referred to Johann Wollersheim, who ran a bakery here from 1906. Inside there were ornamented floor tiles in the street-side corridor area, a wooden staircase with turned bars and wooden railings, a stucco ceiling in the shop and a vaulted cellar.

The converted attic, the shop area, front door and window were later changed from their original state.

history

Relevance for the district

In the second half of the 19th century, Ehrenfeld grew very quickly, mainly through industrial settlements. What was then Jacobstrasse, today Hansemannstrasse, was laid out until 1880; it branches off from Venloer Strasse and was one of the first road developments. House no. 2 was an example of the early development phase, the socio-historical development of Ehrenfeld and the "growing self-confidence of the residents of Ehrenfeld in these times of economic boom".

The baker Peter Riem is proven to be the owner of the building as early as 1891. The last owner of the house was a holding company of WvM Immobilien + Projektentwicklung GmbH, which is carrying out construction work on the neighboring property.

According to the client, the house should not be demolished, but application for renovation has already been made, after which the house should have been harmoniously integrated into the modern neighborhood architecture. As a static protective measure against the nearby excavation work, a start was made to underpin the building with concrete bars. During this work, the vaulted cellar gave way, so that the house sank by several centimeters. A large crack ran through the entire house, clearly visible from the outside. Due to the risk of collapse, Hansemannstraße was temporarily closed and entry into the house was prohibited, as was work on the neighboring property. About a week later, the house was supported with large wooden beams, which led to emotional reactions from the population, which led to a police and fire service. According to the client, the exact cause of the specific incident could not be finally determined in January 2019.

Demolished after efforts to preserve it

After the incident, various sides campaigned for the preservation and restoration of the building, including the Ehrenfeld citizens' association and the Ehrenfeld district council in their meeting on June 4, 2018. The decision of the district representatives on the basis of a joint application by the parliamentary groups of Bündnis 90 / Die Greens , Die Linke as well as a single mandate holder of the voter group Deine Freunde demanded, among other things, not to issue a demolition permit for the listed building and to oblige the sponsor of the building project "Hansemannstr./Venloer Str./Philippstr." According to § 27 Monument Protection Act North Rhine-Westphalia to stop the construction work immediately and restore the previous state or what was destroyed.

Two reports came to the conclusion that the house could no longer be saved without risking human lives, which is why the city administration issued the demolition permit in December 2018, which the preservation authorities no longer opposed.

The demolition work began on January 7, 2019. The stucco decorations on the facade were recovered by February 2019 and handed over to the city of Cologne.
