The Sakhalin Bay ( Russian Сахалинский залив ) is a bay in the west of the Sea of Okhotsk .
The Sakhalin Bay lies between the Asian mainland coast north of the mouth of the Amur in the west and the north coast of the island of Sakhalin in the east. The Sakhalin Bay opens to the north. It has a bay depth of about 100 km and a maximum width of 158 km. At the transition to the Tatarensund in the south , the smallest bay width is 22 km. The lagoon-like Stschasstja Bay , into which the Iska flows, lies on the mainland coast . On the north coast of Sakhalin is the Baikal Bay with the fishing port Moskalwo and the Pomor Bay , both lagoon-like with an offshore island called Ush or a spit .
The Sakhalin Bay is ice-covered between mid-November and the end of April. The coasts are mostly flat. The irregular tides show a tidal range of 2-3 m.
Wildlife
There is fishing in the Sakhalin Bay. There are salmon and cod caught. Beluga whales congregate in Sakhalin Bay in the spring and summer to hunt fish that are on their way to their spawning waters .
