Eat-in kitchen

An eat-in kitchen is generally understood to be a kitchen in which there is space for a table with several chairs and which can be heated and separated from other living rooms.

At the time of the open fireplace, or later the stove, the kitchen as a workspace was also the center of family life. It was often the only heated room in poor households. Starting with the Frankfurt kitchen , the kitchen was primarily defined as a pure work space. However, this view only became generally accepted when the housing shortage after the Second World War had been overcome and central heating became common, so that the kitchen heated by the coal stove no longer had to serve as the only warm lounge. The kitchen has experienced a renaissance as a lounge since the late 1970s. Nowadays, open kitchens are more common, in which the living room or dining room and kitchen merge.

In some rent indexes in Germany, the term eat-in kitchen is a feature that can increase the quality of living . In Berlin a room size of 14 m² is required, in Cottbus it is 12 m².

Switzerland

In Switzerland, the classification as an eat-in kitchen depends on the size of the apartment. It must be at least 7.5 m² in size and have two permanent seats, in an apartment with more than three rooms at least three seats. An eat-in kitchen falls under the Noise Protection Ordinance.
