Wolfgang Schreiner (born April 11, 1957 ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper who made 23 Bundesliga appearances for MSV Duisburg .

Career

For the 1975/76 season, Schreiner was accepted into the Bundesliga squad of MSV Duisburg, but was only intended as a reservist behind Gerhard Heinze and Dietmar Linders . At the end of a season in which he was not called up, Linders said goodbye, while Heinze remained the firm number one. However, after a game against FC Schalke 04 he was hospitalized with severe kidney problems , whereupon Schreiner moved up for him and made his debut in the top German division on November 27, 1976 in a 0-0 win against Hamburger SV at the age of 19 gave. He then played another game and then made way for the returning goalkeeper. The following seasons, in which he was repeatedly allowed to replace Heinze for a certain period of time, were similar. His longest stay in the goalkeeping position came at the beginning of the 1978/79 season. At that time, he guarded the MSV gate in eight consecutive encounters after Heinze broke his hand during training. He remained loyal to the club until it was relegated to the second division in 1982, but had never been able to prevail against Heinze, who was almost nine years older. From 1976 until his departure, he had been considered for several Bundesliga games in six consecutive seasons, but did not get more than 23 games in the overall balance.

After 1982, Schreiner said goodbye to paid football. In 1988 he returned to the professional field with the move from VfB Remscheid to the second division Union Solingen . The now 31-year-old took a permanent place there and was on the field in all 38 games in the 1988/89 season, but had to accept the relegation of his team at the end, which ended his professional career.
