Wolfgang Wiechert

Wolfgang Wiechert (born March 3, 1960 in Opladen , now Leverkusen ) is Professor of Systems Biology at RWTH Aachen University and has been Head of the Institute for Biotechnology (IBG-1: Biotechnology) at Forschungszentrum Jülich since 2009 .

Wiechert studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Bonn from 1979 to 1985 and received his doctorate there in 1990 after postgraduate studies in biotechnology and bioprocess engineering with distinction in theoretical biology and biotechnology . From 1990 to 1995 he was a research assistant at the Research Center Jülich in the Institute for Biotechnology. In 1995 he completed his habilitation on the basics of the metabolic 13C substance flow analysis method at the University of Bonn. In 1996 he was appointed professor for simulation technology at the Institute for Mechanics and Control Engineering of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Siegen , 2002 to 2009 C4 professor for simulation technology and computer science in mechanical engineering at the University of Siegen, since 2009 director of the Institute for Biotechnology 2 at the Research Center Jülich (successor to Christian Wandrey ) and W3 professor for systems biology at RWTH Aachen. In 2006 he was visiting professor at ETH Zurich for six months.

His main area of ​​work is applied systems biology (technology) with a special focus on methods of quantitative biology.
