Wolftrap Mountain

Highest point of the Wolftrap Mountains

The Wolftrap Mountain ( Irish Sliabh Ghaiste na Mac Tíre , "mountain of the trap of the wolves") is a peak in the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Ireland . At 487 m, it is the fourth highest peak in the Slieve Blooms and lies on the border between the counties of Laois and Offaly .

Wolftrap Mountain is easily accessible via the R440 road between Mountrath and Kinnitty . From a small parking bay, an approximately 1.5 km long gravel path leads to the summit with only a slight incline. There is a trigonometric point and several transmission masts.

From the summit plateau you have a beautiful view in all directions, but especially to the west of the flat landscape of the Shannon . The Slieve Blooms have been heavily reforested in recent years, but the peaks have been kept free so that the original moorland is still there.

The exact origin of the name is unclear; Wolves were still widespread in Ireland in the 17th century. The last wolf in County Laois was hunted in 1700 (the last wolf in Ireland in 1786).
