Women's Franchise League
The Women's Franchise League was a British organization founded in 1889 by the suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst , her husband Richard and others, fourteen years before the creation of the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903. The organization's president in 1889 was Harriet McIlquham. In 1895 the committee that had met in Aberystwyth included : Ursula Mellor Bright, Mrs. Behrens, Esther? Bright, Herbert Burrows, Dr Clark MP, Ms. Hunter of Matlock Bank, Jane Brownlow, Ms. E. James (who lived nearby), Herbert Newman Mozley, Alice Cliff Scatcherd, Countess Gertrude Guillaume-Schack, Jane Cobden Unwin and Emmeline and Richard Pankhurst.
The main achievement of the organization was to secure votes for some married women in local elections through a campaign for members. Until the 1894 Local Government Act of 1894, only a few women could vote in local elections.
