The Woodward Dream Cruise is a Southeast Michigan classic car event held in the greater Detroit area on the third Saturday in August each year . The parade route runs along Woodward Avenue between Pontiac and Ferndale and to the State Fair Grounds in Detroit near 8 Mile Road. The event has around one to 1.5 million spectators every year.

The next Dream Cruise will take place on Saturday 17th August 2019.

history

In 1994, Mayor Pamela S. McCullough and Nelson House of Ferndale had the idea of organizing a car event to raise money for a soccer field for children in their community. They also wanted to revive the times of the 1950s and 60s, when young people drove up and down America's first highway, Woodward Avenue, with music and "Motor City Steel" - from one drive-through to the next.

The first "Cruise" took place on August 19, 1995 on Woodward Avenue between Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak and Birmingham. It was an immediate success, because the organizers had expected 30,000 to 40,000 spectators and 250,000 spectators came.

In 1996, Woodward Dream Cruise, Inc. (WDC, Inc.) was founded as a non-profit organization that takes care of the organization and implementation. President and CEO is Tony Michaels. The board consists of representatives from the nine hosting locations plus Oakland County and media sponsors The Oakland Press, WXYZ-TV and WOMC 104.3 FM.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is now the world's largest car event, with around 40,000 participating classic cars from all over the world and 1.5 million spectators. The approximately 25-kilometer parade route runs on Woodward Avenue through the communities of Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Pontiac and Royal Oak.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is also a major economic driver for the region, adding $ 240 million to the local economy. The Tourist Office estimates that a quarter of visitors are out of town and spend $ 84 million on room and board. Around one million visitors from the region spend an estimated $ 153 million.

Antique car

Every year around 40,000 classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods, collector's and special interest vehicles take part in the parade. Most are from the 50s, 60s and early 70s. Many come from the region, but not a few travel extra from other US states, Canada and even from Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
