World Development is a multidisciplinary scientific journal on economic topics published by the Dutch publisher Elsevier . The specialty is development economics , especially topics such as poverty reduction , malnutrition , national debt and conflict research . It was founded in 1973 by Paul Streeten .

Editor-in-chief is Arun Agrawal (2015). He is assisted by four Associate Editors: Francisco Alpizar , Anthony Bebbington , Beatriz Magaloni and Jean-Philippe Platteau . There are also a number of advisory editors.

The impact factor in 2016 was 2.848, the five-year impact factor was 3.354. With this, the journal was ranked 48th out of a total of 347 scientific journals listed in the economics category for the Impact Factor and 5th out of 55 journals in the planning and development category .

A study by the French economists Pierre-Phillippe Combes and Laurent Linnemer ranks the journal in the third-best category A, ranking 34th out of 600 economic journals.
