The World of Wearable Art Show takes place annually for two weeks in September in Wellington / New Zealand . A story is told by means of music, dance, light and, above all, the portable “works of art”. In the foreground of the theater show are the artfully tailored costumes, each of which represents a specific theme and has its own choreography.

history

The WOW show has its origins in Nelson , where it took place in 1987 as a doctorate for an art gallery there. Since then, the show has grown steadily and has developed into a New Zealand-wide creativity event for designers.

The founder Suzie Moncrieff is now the creative director of the event, which attracts 30,000 visitors every year. In 2011 there were already 50,000 spectators who saw the costumes of the 300 designers. A guest appearance at the Hong Kong Arts Festival is planned for 2012 .

Until 2004 the show took place in Nelson. Increasing visitor numbers and insufficient visitor capacity forced the organizers to move the show to Wellington from 2005 onwards. The administration and the WOW & Classic Cars Museum with costumes and cars have remained in Nelson and are a popular destination.
