The Worshipful Company of Ironmongers (short: Ironmongers ′ Company ) is the livery company of the ironmongers of the City of London .

history

The Ironmongers Company were founded as Ferroners (from Latin ferrum , iron ) under a Royal Charter in 1463.

The association ranks tenth in the order of precedence among the London Livery Companies. It is therefore one of the "Great Twelve City Livery Companies" (twelve major professional associations in London).

The motto of the association is God Is Our Strength .

task

The task of the Ironmongers Company was originally to protect and represent the interests of the ironmongers, especially their members, as a guild .

Today the community is primarily a social and charitable institution (charitable support: Ironmongers' Foundation).

Ironmongers Hall

The company's current headquarters are in Ironmongers Hall on Aldersgate Street ( Aldgate ).

The first building of Ironmonger Company was built in 1457 and was in Fenchurch Street N o 117. This building was built in 1587 and rebuilt in 1745 in the same place again. This third building from 1745 was destroyed by a bomb on July 7, 1917 as part of the warfare of the First World War . The current building stands on a property that was acquired in 1922. In 1922 the construction work also started and was completed on June 17, 1925 (ceremonial opening of the building).

The Anglican Church of St. Olave in the City of London was the church of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers and the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers .
