Wounaan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wounaan , also called Noanama and Wunana , are an indigenous people in Colombia and Panama .

They live in Colombia on the lower reaches of the Río San Juan and Río Docampado in an area of 189,452 ha. The population was estimated in 1997 by the Departamento Nacional de Planeación at 7,962 people. The presence of armed groups and the increased violence as a result of the coca cultivation pouring into the Wounaan area makes it increasingly difficult for the Wounaan to hunt or forage.

In Panama, around 3,000 Wounaan live in the autonomous indigenous territory of Emberá-Wounaan .
