Wouter Crabeth (* around 1520 in Gouda ; † 1589 in Gouda) was an important Dutch glass painter of his time.

Life

Wouter Crabeth was a member of the well-known family of painters and glass painters Crabeth . His exact date of birth is not known and has been reconstructed from other life dates. He was a son of Pieter Crepel (Crippled Peter) Crabeth and is about 15 years younger brother of the glass painter Dirck Crabeth . Much of the early years of his life is unknown. He is first mentioned in the files of the city archive in 1542 in connection with the sale of his father's house. He married (probably before 1560) Neeltje, the daughter of Govert van Proyen and Clara Dircxdr. de Vrije. This emerges from a record in the church archives from September 1, 1560, which said: “A child of Wouter Pietersz., A glass painter, was buried”. Wouter's son Pieter, who later held important positions in the city administration, was born around 1568. In 1564 he bought a house at the back of the so-called Vismarkt, where he apparently lived until his death.

Wouter is mentioned for the first time in 1559 in connection with the glass windows in the Sint Janskerk in Gouda. What he did before remains unknown. He may have been in Italy and worked there as a glass painter. However, there is no reliable information on this. It is certain that he made his first stained glass window for the Sint Janskerk in 1562. This work actually shows an familiarity with the Italian and Antwerp tradition that suggests that he lived and learned there. Tradition has it that the competition between the Dirck and Wouter brothers was so bitter that they veiled their works when one came into the other's workshop. On the other hand, it is known that both supported each other and performed artistic work for each other. In the period from 1559 to 1567 he created four monumental glass windows for the Sint Janskerk in Gouda. From 1570 until his death in 1589 he regularly worked with Glaser Jan Woutersz. regarding the maintenance of the windows. In addition to the windows he created for the church in Gouda, designs for windows in Braunschweig (approx. 1560) and Paris (1567) are attributed to him. After the death of his brother Dirck in 1574, he took over the role of town draftsman, which his father held before his brother.
