The wishing well is a term from European folklore . What is meant is a fountain that makes every wish come true. The background was the belief that the water contained divine beings or had been placed by gods in a certain place.

The tradition of throwing coins in fountains stems from this idea. The coins represent the thank you for the wishes that have been fulfilled or those still to be fulfilled. One of the most famous wishing fountains in the world is the Trevi Fountain in Rome .
