The Wei Emperor Cao Rui was kind to him. He sent him to Liaodong Headquarters in 237 to defeat local warlord Gongsun Yuan, but a flood stopped him. The next year he and Sima Yi had success with the campaign, for which Guanqiu Jian received the title of Marquis of Anyi ( 安邑 候 ).

In 244, Guanqiu Jian led the second punitive expedition to Goguryeo. He defeated the Goguryeo army under the leadership of King Gong ( ) on the Tongjia River and took their capital, Wandu. During the third campaign the next year, he recaptured the capital and forced the king to flee to the southeast. One subdivision of the army reached the east coast of the peninsula, another reached northern Manchuria . To commemorate the campaign of conquest, a stone relief was placed during the campaign. Part of it was discovered in 1905. Today it is called "Monument to Guanqiu Jian, Achievements Engraved " ( 毌 丘 儉 紀 功 碑 ).

Guanqiu Jian was defeated and killed in a revolt against Sima Shi , the regent for Cao Fang . Some scholasts consider this act to be a consequence of his loyalty to the Cao family, others dismiss it as a mere rebellion.
