Throwing knots or throwing line knots are used to weight down the end of a throwing line . In general, a monkey fist or a multiple overhand knot , for example a Franciscan knot , can be used for this purpose; in particular, the knot described here is usually meant. The throw lines used in large shipping to hand over the thick mooring lines are usually weighted down with a small leather bag filled with sand.

A distinction must be made between “thrown knots” such as the thrown loom line and those that are more like “sailor tricks” and have nothing to do with this throwline knot. Another difference from the throwing knot is the tightening lasso knot .

Knot

First a bay is laid. This is wrapped with the free end of the rope at least three to five times. The short end is put into the eye created during winding . The knot is tightened at the long end. The individual turns of the knot should lay evenly next to each other. The more turns, the higher the weight.

Comparison with the multiple overhand knot

The nodes differ in the order of the windings.
A : The end of the throwing knot is almost at right angles.
B : With the multiple overhand knot , the end is in a straight line
Rope consumption with a 10-fold overhand knot. 60 cm contain the finished 10 tightly wound windings / trips

Modifications

Making a rigging
  • With whacking , the same working method is used around one end.
  • If the bay is laid twice, a tight noose is created, see hangman's knot .
  • As a "boat shoe knot" it is also used as a lace tie.
