As the root neck in is plants of the lower part of the hypocotyl , respectively. This part is often swollen. It is the transition zone between the shoot axis and the (main) root . On the one hand, the root neck is covered with a shoot epidermis , which often forms root neck rhizoids (single-celled trichomes as an outgrowth of the epidermal cell). Root neck rhizoids anchor the seedling in the soil and are usually longer and more durable than the otherwise similar root hairs .

Anatomically, in the area of ​​the root neck, the transition from the vascular structure of the root (central stele ) to that of the stem axis takes place.
