Monastery of the Fifth Patriarch

The Monastery of the Fifth Patriarch ( Chinese  五祖 寺 , Pinyin Wǔzǔ sì , English Fifth Patriarch Monastery / Wuzu Temple  - "Monastery of the Fifth Patriarch") or Dongshan Monastery (Chinese Dongshan si 东 山寺; English Tung-shan monastery / Dongshan Temple) was founded in the Tang Dynasty by the Fifth Patriarch ( Hongren , 弘忍, 601-674) of Chan Buddhism. It is located in the district of Huangmei the prefecture-level city Huanggang in the Chinese province of Hubei . It was destroyed during the Qing Dynasty (1854) and later rebuilt.

It is one of the national focus temples of Buddhism in Han Chinese areas . The Monastery of the Fifth Patriarch ( Wuzu Si ) has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-658) since 2006 .
