translation

John Wyclif collected various English Bible translations and revised them. For this translation work he used the Latin Bible, the Vulgate , as the basis for translation . The resulting translation was not the first translation into English , but represents a compilation and revision of previous translations.

Copies of the Bible translation were handwritten because the printing press was not yet available, but its translation spread across the country through his followers, who were called Lollards .
