Wydler sign

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wydler sign denotes a forensic medical finding in the event of death by drowning .

As part of the autopsy of a person who is believed to have died by drowning, the stomach contents are removed and placed in a beaker . After a certain period of time, a characteristic three-layer structure, the Wydler sign , can be observed: there is a foamy phase at the top, a liquid phase in the middle and a solid phase at the bottom of the glass .

The Wydler sign can be used as a diagnostic criterion for death from drowning, but it is not of itself indicative .
