X.500
The ITU-T's X.500 standard is a term from computer technology . It describes the structure of a directory service . This directory service can be accessed globally. There is no complete implementation of X.500, as the standard is very extensive and is based on an ISO / OSI stack , which made implementation difficult and computationally intensive and thus prevented success. A comprehensive directory service based on X.500 was developed between universities and research institutes in the early 1990s and is still in use.
The X.509 standard for a cryptographic public key infrastructure , which was originally intended to be based on X.500, achieved widespread use. A common protocol that is based on X.500, but does not meet all of its requirements, is LDAP .
