XEL identifier for imported beef from Great Britain

The XEL identification (for Exchange Eligible , English import and export ) has been mandatory for British beef since April 1, 2000 . Meat imported directly must be marked with the XEL symbol (hexagon with inside writing) and the producer number. Meat processed or indirectly imported in Germany must bear the label “British XEL meat” next to the importing country.

Before that, there was a corresponding import ban in Germany because of the BSE disease.
