XPI

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

XPI or XPInstall ( Cross-Platform Install ; pronunciation: / zɪp.i /, or like an English pronounced 'zippy') is a file format for installation files developed by the Mozilla Foundation .

XPI files are installed to expand the functionality of a program. Programs like Mozilla , Mozilla Firefox , Mozilla Thunderbird or other XUL -based applications use XPI.

An XPI file is a ZIP container that contains an installation script ( install.rdf ; formerly install.js ) and other files. The XPI file can be opened with any common packer program that can handle the ZIP format, e.g. B. with the built-in mechanism in Mac OS or Windows . If necessary, the file extension must first be changed to .zip.

The MIME type of an XPI file is application / x-xpinstall.
