XScreenSaver is a free screensaver for Unix operating systems that use the X Window System . It was developed by Jamie Zawinski and is under the MIT license .
The XScreenSaver is particularly widespread on the free Unix systems ( GNU / Linux and others). However, the desktop environments KDE and GNOME have developed their own screen savers ( kscreensaver and gnome-screensaver ).
One reason for the popularity of the XScreenSaver is the possibility for programmers to develop their own modules. For example, OpenGL -based animations such as GLMatrix can be added. A management system enables the modules to be configured, for example at what speed the animations should be played. Some modules also process image files or texts that are freely adjustable.
In addition to changing the screen content, the current X session can be locked so that the user has to enter his password to access the screen content again.
Against the will of the author, the Debian packagers removed a warning from the program in 2016 that appeared when an old program version was started.
