Xintiandi ( Chinese 新天地 , Pinyin Xīntiāndì , Shanghai dialect: Shintidi, literally: "New Heaven and (New) Earth", meaning: "New World") is a modern, car-free shopping and nightlife district on Xingye Road, South Huangpi Road and Madang Road in the district of Huangpu in Shanghai .
Historic district
The quarter consists of a part of reconstructed traditional stone houses ( 石库门 , Shíkùmén ) from the mid-19th century and narrow streets.
The first National Congress of the Communist Party of China took place in one of the stone houses in July 1921 , and today it houses the associated “Museum of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China”. Also nearby is the Shikumen Open House Museum and the place where the "Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea" was located when Korea was a Japanese colony.
Nowadays, Xintiandi is a popular nightlife district with bookshops, cafes, restaurants and shopping malls in its stone houses. Xintiandi has a very active nightlife on both weekdays and weekends.
Modern district
Behind the traditional part of Xintiandi, a new part of the neighborhood continues to the north. A new shopping mall was built above the South Huangpi Road station, which also belongs to Xintiandi.
