Yamaha X-City is a maxi scooter from Yamaha . The model was introduced in early 2007 with engines of the 125 cc and 250 cc class.

The Yamaha internal designation of the X-City 250 is VP250 and the designation of the X-City 125 is VP125. The X-City is finally assembled in Italy. The engine and other parts are also shared by other maxi scooters from Peugeot, MBK (subsidiary of Yamaha) and other manufacturers. With a 16 ″ wheel in the front and a 15 ″ wheel in the rear, the X-City has the largest wheels in the maxi scooter class. Scooters with wheels of this size are therefore also called large-wheel scooters . This makes it a very safe and comfortable maxi scooter, which also drives well on poor road surfaces.

Both engines are equipped with 3-way catalytic converters and thus meet the Euro 3 standard. The sister model, the Yamaha X-MAX 125/250, was introduced a year earlier (2006). With the launch of the X-City in 2007, the X-MAX also received a newly developed 125 cc engine. The Yamaha X-MAX models from 2006 are equipped with a somewhat weaker and less powerful and easy-revving motor.

predecessor

The predecessor of the X-City series was the Yamaha Versity 300 introduced in 2004. Due to the high price of the Versity 300, it did not meet the company's high sales expectations. The Versity was only sold well in Italy. The direct successor was the Yamaha X-MAX introduced in 2006. The X-MAX got engines with 125 cm³ and 250 cm³ on the way, especially the 125cc version was very important for the European market, since in Italy and France the 125cc class can already be driven with a regular car driver's license. In contrast to this, in Germany only a motorcycle with a maximum of 50 cm³ can be driven with a class B driver's license. The 250 cc engines of the X-City and X-MAX have been reduced by approx. 35 cc to fall below the 250 cc limit. The engine is a further development and very reliable. The oil, approx. 1 l, has to be changed every 3000 km, as no full-fledged oil filter was installed. The X-City shares many components with the X-MAX. The biggest differences are the wheels of the X-MAX, which are 1 ″ smaller, as well as the slightly angular and more aggressive form of the fairing. In addition, the cockpit is not as high-quality as the X-City. Due to the smaller wheels, the X-MAX has more storage space under the bench and can stow two helmets, as opposed to just one helmet on the X-City.

Markets

The X-City and X-MAX are in Belgium, Germany, Estonia, France, Finland, Greece, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden , Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary & Ukraine. The X-City and X-MAX are not sold in Asia and North America.

The markets in which the X-City sells best are Italy, France, Spain, Great Britain, Germany & the Netherlands, with by far the greatest number being sold in Italy and France. The X-MAX seems to be a bit more popular in the colder EU countries, but in general the X-MAX sells around 3 times as often as the X-City.

2009 model and accessories

The 2009 X-City 125 and X-City 250 received an adjustable windshield. The windshield on the 2007/2008 models is not adjustable. The 2009 model year now also has the rear luggage rack as standard. Both improvements are very welcome, especially the adjustable windshield is very good for taller riders over six feet. The now standard luggage rack is a good addition, as most X-City owners use a topcase to have enough space for two large helmets. Yamaha also offers other accessories:

  • Leg protection, to protect against rain and wind at higher speeds
  • A bigger windshield. In addition, it offers protection for the hands and a lot more protection against rain and wind, especially at lower speeds in the city.

Motorcycle accessory specialists also offer a blanket combination for the legs of the X-City / X-MAX rider. This is attached to the body with Velcro loops and is easy to mount from the side. This prevents wind or rain from getting on the driver's legs and shoes. This means you can still drive at relatively low temperatures.
