Yangire

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The word Yangire ( ヤ ン ギ レ, ' ) denotes a certain type of character that occurs in Japanese popular culture .

Yangire is usually a female character type who has suffered severe emotional and psychological damage as a result of a trauma experienced in the past and who can very quickly get into a violent and psychotic state. However, male characters can also show characteristics of a Yangire.

A similar type of character is the Yandere . A difference to the Yangire is that a character identified as Yandere from - mostly unrequited - love falls into a psychotic state in the further course. Due to the unpredictability of the psychotic thrust, yangire are described as more dangerous than yandere.

Word origin

The term Yangire is made up of a combination of the terms yanderu ( 病 ん で る , dt. " To be sick") and kire or gire ( 切 れ , dt. " To lose control").

history

The term Yangire was first used in the manga Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS . Well-known characters who have this character type are for example Keiichi Maebara and Rena Ryūgū from the sound novel Higurashi no Naku Koro ni , Reisuke Hōjō and Tsubaki Kasugano from Mirai Nikki , Kurumi Tokisaki from Date A Live and Lucy from Elfen Lied . This character type is also attributed to the protagonist of the manga and anime Death Note , Light Yagami .

Character type

Yangirs appear sweet, dear and enchanting at first glance, but they tend to fall into a bloodthirsty and psychotic state when they are stressed. The characters suffered one or more trauma in their life, which resulted in considerable emotional and spiritual damage. Compared to Yandere , Yangire characters act unpredictably as an interpersonal relationship is not an issue.

The experience of rejection, for example in the form of a degradation into a state of absolute helplessness, poverty and despair, have a central effect in the emergence and development of many Yangire characters. As an example, Rena Ryūgū from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is mentioned, who falls into this state through the divorce of her parents, through the rejection of her mother and herself. This state of affairs is represented by her fascination with the city's illegal rubbish dump, where she spends time hunting for treasure, her self-harming behavior - she cuts herself to shed maternal blood - and hallucinations .

The behavior of Yangire and Yandere is based, among other things, on the trauma suffered. Examples are the characters Lucy from Elfen Lied and Yuno Gasai from Mirai Nikki , both of whom were traumatized. For example, Yuno Gasai was physically harmed by her parents after she could not meet the demands of her parents, and Lucy's sadistic behavior is also indirectly justified with physical abuse.
