Higurashi When They Cry ( jap. ひぐらしのなく頃に., Dt "At the time of chirping cicadas [ Tanna japonensis ]") is a Dojin - Sound Novel of 07th Expansion , which on the NScripter - Engine touches. The plot was only in the form of two Anime - television series , an OVA , and in several manga , radio plays , light novel adapted and as a live-action film.

In the vicinity of the rural village of Hinamizawa , an incurable disease breaks out a few centuries before the start of the actual plot, which turns out to be a parasitic life form in the course of the plot, which puts the person affected in a psychologically unstable state, which is accompanied by paranoia and hallucinations and closes aggressive acts and frenzy. In this way the afflicted attacked their fellow human beings until they finally killed themselves. Based on the recurring atrocities, numerous legends about Oni and the "Curse of Oyashiro-sama" ( Oyashiro-sama no Tatari ) were created. A female member of the Furude family succeeded in overcoming the disease and releasing a messenger substance into the environment that brought the sick person into an almost stable state. Particularly harsh torture methods were linked to the curse to deter the still threatened population.

When a dam was to be built in modern times, as a result of which the village would be flooded, two of the three "ruling families " ( Sonozaki , Kimiyoshi and Furude ) resisted it with all possible means and are not even afraid of the kidnapping of the grandson of the building minister Inukai back, as the Sonozaki in particular have good relations with the yakuza . The Furude family, however, does not oppose the construction and protects the Hōjō family, who supported the dam. Little by little, members of both families continue to die or disappear. Even after the dam was prevented, there continues to be a deep dislike of the remaining Hōjō, which is sparked again and again by the mutual competition between the two families. At the same time, a research institute was established in the village, which is secretly investigating the virus that was discovered during a military operation in World War II. The head of the institute is Dr. Kyōsuke Irie , behind whose back Miyo Takano pulls the strings and developed a biological weapon for the military from the virus. From the outside, this institution is disguised as a public hospital.

At the beginning of June 1983, Keiichi Maebara moved to the said place and made friends there with his schoolmates Rena Ryūgū , Shion and Mion Sonozaki , Satoko Hōjō and Rika Furude . Keiichi joins a club where they play together. Everything seems quite peaceful and relaxed, until Keiichi learns that for four years in a row, after the annual Watanagashi festival ( cf.tōrō nagashi ) in honor of Oyashiro-sama on June 19, one person has died in a strange way another person disappears without a trace. Some of his classmates are responsible for these deeds. They turned into murderers after brief attacks of frenzy but cannot remember what they did.

Scenario - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

Rika, who has not yet killed anyone, is stuck in a time warp and is murdered again and again on the night of June 21, whereupon she starts again at the same point in the plot about two weeks earlier. Depending on her choices, she can change the future, but with the deadly cocktail of the virus, the insane Miyo Takano, and the relationships between the families, she can't find a way to prevent her own death. Certain events occur in each of these worlds: On the night of June 19, the photographer Jirō Tomitake dies and the nurse Miyo fakes her death, which Rika does not know. Two nights later, on June 21st, regardless of the actions of her friends, Rika is murdered by Miyo's followers, so that the circle comes full.

Nevertheless, she tries again and again to break out of this time loop and repeatedly takes advice from her second self, Hanyū Furude , but is on the verge of desperation. An escape from the place is also out of the question, since, as the carrier of the messenger substances , she cannot leave Hinamizawa without everyone dying. Because of the many attempts that she has already made, in many of the individual stories she has the opportunity to predict things again and again, as she has played through almost every scenario. However, when she wakes up after another murder of her, she has little memory of the previous events, which makes it even more difficult for her to steer the events in the right direction. But even her friends sometimes have memories of their previous deeds, which they only remember like a dream and ignore until they are specifically addressed by Rika.

Although Rika jumps from one world to the next, the events in the worlds in which she is already dead still continue and end with the release of the virus and the total extermination of the village, which is hidden from the outside as an outbreak of volcanic gases .

Question chapter - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

This chapter introduces Hinamizawa's everyday life and explains the relationships between the characters. But that atmosphere changes suddenly after the Watanagashi Festival when Keiichi discovers that his friends have been lying to him all along . The end of the chapter depicts Rena Ryugu and Mion Sonozaki as criminals.

This story also begins peacefully with the introduction of Shion Sonozaki , Mion's twin sister. But again after the Watanagashi Festival the mood changes and Mion is portrayed as a culprit .
  • Tatarigoroshi-hen ( 祟 殺 し 編 , Eng . "Chapter: Cursed Murder"; published on August 15, 2003)
This longer chapter shows Satoko as a victim who tries to help Keiichi by all means. However, as more and more people perish, it turns out that he is not the only one responsible for their deaths. Despite his good intentions, Keiichi is touted as a murderer in this section.
  • Himatsubushi-hen ( 暇 潰 し 編 , Eng . "Chapter: Killing Time" published on August 13, 2004)
The action takes place five years before Tatarigoroshi-hen and is told from the perspective of Mamoru Akasaka , a young police officer. In Hinamizawa he is supposed to find clues about the kidnapped grandson of the minister responsible for building the dam and is becoming increasingly entangled in the mysteries of the village. Meakashi-hen refers to the events of the Watanagashi-hen chapter and tells the events from the perspective of Shion Sonozaki . Here it is also shown that a lost love is the trigger for the crimes whose hatred is fueled by the non-return of love on the part of Keiichi. In addition, initial information is given as to how the individual chapters are related.
  • Tsumihoroboshi-hen ( 罪 滅 し 編 , "Chapter: Repentance"; published August 14, 2005)
The chapter represents a resolution to Onikakushi-hen , but differs greatly from the plot of the question chapter. So Rena gets into a situation similar to the one Keiichi went through in Onikakushi-hen , makes a serious mistake and becomes suspicious of her friends. It is also the first chapter with a seemingly happy ending, even if various references to threatening backgrounds are given that will certainly occur following the line of action.


Answer chapter - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

  • Minagoroshi-hen ( 皆 殺 し 編 , Eng . "Chapter: Massacre"; published December 30, 2005)
This section shows the dissolution of Tatarigoroshi-hen and is told from the perspective of Rika Furude . Hanyū Furude , which can only be seen by Rika, is shown for the first time . Despite her strong frustration, she tries to steer events in a different direction again, when she helps a simple game of chance between Keiichi and Mion to a happy end, so that Shion does not become a murderer through an inner frustration. For the first time, she succeeds in preventing her other friends from committing acts of violence, and with their help can convince even the extended families to stand up for Satoko, a remaining family member of the hated Hōjō. With this it is possible to free Satoko from the hands of her brutal uncle without any fatal incidents. However, this attempt also fails when the photographer Jirō is murdered by the previously not suspected Miyo. Together with her friends, she tries to flee from her murderers, the followers of Miyo, on the night of June 21, which they almost succeeded in doing - if they had been another person. As a result, the murder of the population takes place nonetheless, and it shows the insane nature of the nurse.

Now that the real culprit is known, in this chapter the individual pieces of the puzzle are put together in order to defeat him and get over the date of June 21, 1983. It's a good ending with no major deaths.

Characters

In almost each of the scenarios based on the time loop, six figures come to the fore. These are the only male main character Keiichi Maebara and his four classmates Rena Ryūgū , Mion Sonozaki , Satoko Hōjō and Rika Furude as well as Mions sister Shion Sonozaki and from the beginning of the 2nd season Hanyū Furude . He was able to make friends with them very quickly and they are the only youngsters in the village who are close to his age. Satoko and Rika are younger than their playmates, but at the beginning of the plot they live together and alone in a house and are accordingly independent.

Keiichi Maebara
前 原 圭一
Maebara Keiichi 		The 18- (game) or 15-year-old (anime) boy who only moved to the village at the beginning of June 1983 and has yet to get used to life in the country. He is also the protagonist of the first three chapters of questions . His natural charisma helps him to quickly find new friends, although he does not find a large selection of people of the same age in the small town. The son of a famous artist , he is a skilled public speaker and gambler . In this way, he can use his linguistic talent in the answer chapters to resolve conflicts peacefully and to establish a peaceful relationship with Mion, even though both are rivals in the games of chance. He, too, is subject to the effects of Hinamizawa syndrome and is therefore easily irritable and suffers from paranoia in an advanced stage . So he mostly armed himself with the baseball bat of Satoko's big brother, Satoshi.
Rena Ryūgū
竜 宮 レ ナ
Ryūgū Rena 		She returned to Hinamizawa from Ibaraki a year ago and is attending the same grade level as Keiichi. They both quickly become friends and so she often accompanies him on his way to school. She has a great weakness when it comes to cute-looking objects - however, these are usually not perceived as particularly cute by others . Like most characters, she is easily irritable under the influence of the virus and can even partially remember killing someone and burying them in the local rubbish dump . In the prehistory it is indicated that she had already committed acts of violence before and therefore had to leave the place. When threatened, she often uses a large cleaver , which scares her friends and inadvertently worsens the situation. Since she returned from Ibaraki, she has given up her real name Reina ( 礼 奈 ) and has since introduced herself with Rena in order to distract from her past and to set a point for herself to change her life.
Mion Sonozaki
園 崎 魅 音
Sonozaki Mion 		She is the twin sister of Shion and a member of the Sonozaki family and is seen as the successor to the head of the family, which is why she is very popular in Hinamizawa. She and her twin sister Shion like to swap roles because they look very similar. She has masculine character traits and, as the oldest student in the class, takes on the position of leader, even if she briefly shows her childlike side. Keiichi often regards her as her rival, even if her affection for him is shown in later episodes. Her real name is actually Shion as she was mistaken for her sister when she was still young and only later received the Oni tattoo, which she ultimately identified as Mion.
Shion Sonozaki
園 崎 詩 音
Sonozaki Shion 		She is the perpetrator in the Watanagashi-Hen chapter, but poses as a Mion. She works in a cafe outside of Hinamizawa. In contrast to Mion, she is very feminine. Shion should originally have been killed, reluctance to see twins in the Sonozaki family's inheritance order, but was then left alive and only sent to a distant boarding school. During occasional flying visits to Hinamizawa, she entered the city as a Mion (who stayed at home unobserved at the appropriate times) and got to know Satoshi Hōjō, Satoko's brother, with whom she fell in love. For her, these feelings are the trigger for the virus outbreak.
Satoko Hōjō
北 条 沙 都 子
Hōjō Satoko 		Satoko is the little sister of the missing Hōjō Satoshi. She is not very popular in the village because her deceased family was active in the dam war and spoke out protectively for the builders of the dam. In some chapters she moves to her parents' home because her uncle threatens to burn down Satoshi's room.
Rika Furude
古 手 梨花
Furude Rika 		Although Rika is shown as a supporting character in Season 1, she turns out to be the main character of the series. She is the queen and the origin of Hinamizawa syndrome, which is why she never freaks out herself. She is the only person who is able to see Hanyu Furude. She is the descendant of one of the three great ruling families, Furude, and is trained as a priestess Oyashiro-Samas. Sometimes characters even refer to her as "Oyashiro-Sama's reincarnation" in the series.
Hanyū Furude
古 手 羽 入
Furude Hanyū 		Hanyū is Hinamizawa's patron goddess and can only be seen by the six female successors of the Furude family. She herself often says that she was in Hinamizawa long before Rika Furude was born and saw how the villagers sacrificed people in their names (mistakenly Oyashiro). The souls of Hanyū and Rika are linked, which means that when Rika dies, Hanyū dies too. Together with Rika she travels the worlds in the hope of finding a world in which none of Rika's friends die. In the last chapter, Hanyū no longer decides to be a spectator, but to actively participate in Rika and her fate. When the perpetrator is exposed in the penultimate chapter, Rika initially forgets this, but is cleared up by Hanyū. Disguised as Rika's relatives, Hanyū embarks on a battle for Hinamizawa's future with Keichi and the others.

Origin and publications

Sound novel

The sound novel Higurashi no Naku Koro ni was developed by the Dōjin Circle 07th Expansion , where the member Ryukishi07 was responsible for the texts and graphics. Each chapter was introduced by a poem recited by the character Frederica Bernkastel , which contained a rough summary of the chapter's contents.

A port of the game to the PlayStation 2 , entitled Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri ( ひ ぐ ら し の な く 頃 に 祭 ) was released by Alchemist on February 22, 2007. This makes it the third dōjin game released for a game console . The first game was Hanakisō and the second was Melty Blood . Although Higurashi no Naku Koro ni was announced as the first game to be ported, it was released as the third game due to the longer development time. This version contained a full voice output of the characters, revised and redrawn graphics, as well as a coherent storyline with Keiichi as the main character. It contains the first seven chapters of the PC version and three more Taraimawashi-hen , Tsukiotoshi-hen and Miotsukushi-hen .

A second revised version appeared on December 20, 2007 under the title Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri: Kakera Asobi ( ひ ぐ ら し の な く 頃 に 祭 カ ケ ラ 遊 び ) and was offered both as an extension of the original and as a single game. This version also contained the previously not included chapter Matsuribayashi-hen and other extras.

An English localization of the first four chapters of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni by MangaGamer was published on December 15, 2009 under the title Higurashi When They Cry . For licensing reasons, some pieces of music from the original could not be used. The Music Room was removed at the suggestion of the licensor. The included mini game and the staff room , in which Ryukishi07 discussed various works for which MangaGamer also had no licenses, was also omitted. The four chapters of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai were published from February 28 to July 15, 2010 , making the original eight chapters in English.

A French version by the translator Pierre Bancov (Saffran Prod) under the title Le sanglot des cigales was first presented on November 30, 2009 at the Chibi Japan Expo 2009 and sold from December 5. This version contains the first two chapters, but also licensed the pieces of music missing in the English version from the six respective rights holders. The game received a PEGI 7 age rating . However, this only applies to the mini-games, as the actual game was not recognized as a game by the PEGI due to its lack of interactivity.

From 2010, SEAMS published the game in Apple's App Store for iPhone / iPod touch / iPad in Japanese and English. The Japanese version contains all eight chapters, while the English version is based on the translation by MangaGamer so far (May 2012) is only available for the first five chapters.

MangaGamer published the first chapter of the revised version Higurashi When They Cry Hou on May 15, 2015 on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux . The changes include a new translation, the content removed in the previous version, an optional new character design by the illustrator Kurosaki and the Japanese texts.

Game mechanics

The game is a sound novel and its presentation follows the conventions of Japanese novel games , i. H. sprite -based graphics with text overlaying the entire screen. There are no animations and no speech output in the PC output, so that the entire plot is represented by the text alone and thus resembles novels. In addition, there is background music.

The aim of the game is that the player should mentally solve the mysteries represented by the plot and their causes. Therefore there are no decision points within the game. Within the individual chapters there are always small pauses during which the player can look at tips that provide him with further background information, but the use of which has no influence on the game. If sound novels can otherwise be described as interactive novels, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni has no interactivity. Changes in the course of action therefore only exist in the actions of the individual question and answer chapters among each other, which are each based on different premises about alleged perpetrators and victims.

The PlayStation 2 version, however, has interactivity due to a branching plot.

There were Wayuta and Hobirecords several different radio plays published.

Wayuta released six CDs of its series since May 27, 2005 (as of July 8, 2008). The first CD began with the chapter Onikakushi-hen , the successors of which continued the main story to Tsumihoroboshi-hen . There are two more releases planned to conclude the main story.

Wayuta also released other CDs parallel to this series. Append Disc 01 ( ア ペ ン ド デ ィ ス ク 01, Eng. "Encore 01") was first released on December 29, 2005 on Comiket 69 . There was a continuation of this side series on October 26, 2007 with Append Disc 02 ( ア ペ ン ド デ ィ ス ク 02, German "encore 02").

Another series of Wayuta introduced a new chapter entitled Kataribanashi-hen ( 語 咄 し 編 ), of which two CDs have been released since April 25, 2007.

With Anthology Drama CD 1 - Hinamizawa-mura Butōkai Hen (December 22, 2005) and Anthology Drama CD 2 - Hinamizawa-mura Suzume Oni Retsuden (March 24, 2006), Hobirecords released two radio play CDs that represent an anthology .

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

The first anime - TV series Higurashi When They Cry ( ひぐらしのなく頃に) has been prepared by Studio Deen and directed by Chiaki Kon produces and covers the action of the four question chapter and the first two chapters answer from. People who bought all nine DVDs of this series received the DVD Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gaiden: Nekogoroshi-hen ( ひ ぐ ら し の な く 頃 に 外 伝 猫 殺 し 編 , English "~ Side story: Chapter of the dead cat"), the one Film adaptation of the novel of the same name. The opening and closing credits are the same as for the first season, but the production staff is the same as for the following second season, which is most evident in the character design. The title alludes to the English proverb curiosity killed the cat ("Curiosity is the cat's death.").

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

The second season of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai ( ひ ぐ ら し の な く 頃 に 解 ) was also produced by Studio Deen under the direction of Chiaki Kon. It contains the remaining answer chapters and an additional section with the title Yakusamashi-hen ( 厄 醒 し し , Eng . "Chapter: Awakening Disaster"), which was broadcast before the chapters Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen and this with the chapters the first season. The season of 24 episodes was first shown on Japanese television from July 6, 2007 to December 17, 2007 and has a slightly different character design.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei

A third season entitled Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei ( ひ ぐ ら し の な く 頃 に 礼 ) appeared as a five-part OVA , which was produced under the direction of Toshifumi Kawase .

The first episode Hajisarashi-hen ( 羞 晒 し 編 , Eng . "Chapter: Pale with Shame") takes place in the swimming pool and is humorous in nature. Keiichi gets magical swimming trunks from Mion's uncle which will make every girl fall in love with him if his name was on her pants for at least 3 hours. After the girls have learned that the uncle has mixed up the pants and the wearer falls in love with the person whose name is on the swimming shorts, they try to prevent Keiichi from becoming a narcissist , but Keiichi refuses to wear their embarrassing replacement swimming shorts .

The next three episodes are a film adaptation of the chapter Saikoroshi-hen ( 賽 殺 し 編 , Eng . "Chapter: Dead Cube") from the game Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei and takes place two months after the main plot. After an accident, Rika finds herself in a different world, in which neither Keiichi, Takano, Irie nor Hanyū exist, Satoko is hostile towards her, but none of the murders has ever taken place.

The fifth and final episode Hirukowashi-hen ( 昼 壊 し 編 , Eng . "Chapter: Shattered Day") also comes from the game Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei . Rena swallows the red Fuwarazu no Magatama , the owner of which falls in love with whoever holds the white counterpart, and vice versa.

For the first season of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni , the title of the same name "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" was produced by Eiko Shimamiya and used as the title melody for the opening credits . The title of the credits "why, or why not" was sung by the dojin musician Rekka Katakiri .

Real film

On May 10, 2008, a live action film directed by Ataru Oikawa was released in Japanese cinemas. This includes the first chapter Onikakushi-hen . Keiichi is played by Gōki Maeda, Rena by Airi Matsuyama, Mion by Rin Asuka, Rika by Aika and Satoko by Erena Ono.

Another part was released on April 18, 2009, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Chikai ( ひ ぐ ら し の な く 頃 に 誓 ). This filmed the chapter Tsumihoroboshi-hen .

reception

The dōjin game became more popular than average after its release. It sold over 500,000 times.

Many fans attribute the success to the tension and fear conveyed by the sound novel: The player is given many clues and hints to solve the riddle. Online communities emerged to discuss theories that emerged from the game. Awareness grew and the game was also discussed in major game magazines.

Trivia

In the anime series Last Period: The Journey to the End of the Despair , Keiichi Maebara, Shion and Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, Satoko Hojo and Rena Ryūgū have a guest appearance in the episode Sono higurashi .
