Yemschi Tepe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yemschi Tepe (also Emschi Tepe ) is the modern name for the remains of an ancient city in the north of Afghanistan in the province of Juzdschan near the oasis of Scheberghan , near the city of the same name and about 100 kilometers west of Baktra , the capital of ancient Bactia .

The city, which occupies around 20 hectares, flourished especially at the time of the Kushana Empire in the first centuries after the birth of Christ, but is probably a Hellenistic foundation. It perished in the Sassanid period. Its ancient name is unknown. The city was round and about 500 meters in diameter. It had walls with several gates. To the north of the city stood a kind of citadel and next to it a palatial building that probably served the local rulers. At the end of the 1960s, Afghan-Soviet excavations took place here, which found a Greek ostracon and numerous statues, among other things .
