York Road is a former London Underground station . It is located on the Piccadilly Line between King's Cross St. Pancras and Caledonian Road stations , at the junction of York Road (now York Way) and Bingfield Street.

history

The station opened on December 15, 1906 as part of the commissioning of the then Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway between Finsbury Park and Barons Court . The station building was designed by Leslie Green in the typical "house style" of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London : blood-red glazed terracotta bricks, large semicircular windows on the upper floor and serrated cornices . In contrast to most of the other stations on this route, the two elevators led directly to the platforms.

From the beginning, the station was rarely used because it was located in a poor, industrial area. From May 5, 1918, it was closed on Sundays, and even completely between May 4 and October 4, 1926. The final closure took place on September 17, 1932. There was a platform change immediately to the northeast of the platforms. This plant was in operation until April 25, 1964. The signal box (signal box) can still be seen from the train moving towards Caledonian Road. The station building is still completely preserved and is used by a private company.

With the revitalization of the adjacent industrial wasteland as part of the Kings Cross Central project , considerations to reopen the station became more concrete. The district politicians hope that the station will relieve the pressure on the King's Cross St. Pancras junction further south as well as positive development of the residential and business district under construction. The traffic concept of the responsible planning authorities, however, does not provide for another subway station. A possible reopening is also dependent on the available financial resources, as the station would have to be completely redesigned and adapted to current requirements, which means that construction costs of £ 21 million can be expected.
