The Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co. was a British manufacturer of steam cars based in Leeds . In 1901 the company manufactured the first steam car. His models had a new type of transverse steam boiler . In 1911 the company was first changed to Yorkshire Commercial Motor Co. , but in 1922 it reverted to the name Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co. The production of steam cars ended in 1937. In 1993 the company was finally dissolved.
Other local steam car manufacturers included John Fowler & Co. , J&H McLaren & Co., and Mann's Patent Steam Cart and Wagon Company . There were also a number of steam engine builders for locomotives.
Transverse steam boiler
The new transverse steam boiler had the advantage over the usual, lengthways shape that the incline when going up or downhill had no effect on steam production. Its structure was similar to that of the steam boilers of the Fairlie locomotives with a central fire box and multiple fire tubes at each of the two ends. The Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co.'s steam boiler had a second set of fire pipes at the top that led back to a central smoke chamber with a single chimney.
Still preserved steam cars
Ten of the manufacturer's steam cars that have survived to this day are known. Several of them have been restored by Tom Varley.
