John Fowler & Company (Leeds) Ltd. was a British agricultural machinery and utility vehicle manufacturer from Leeds . The company founded in 1862 by John Fowler (1826–1864) produced a. a. between 1931 and 1935 trucks with diesel engines .

History and products

Fowler has manufactured steam powered tractors and tractors since the company was founded. A well-known employee of this company was the German engineer and later writer Max Eyth from 1862 . Eyth traveled to Egypt on behalf of Fowler and sold several Fowler steam plow sets to the viceroy's uncle, as well as steam pumps that did the work of the water scoops. Eyth cultivated the entire Nile Delta with Fowler's steam plows and was also on the road in his name in the USA and Eastern Europe .

In 1924 the production of steam-powered trucks began. 117 vehicles were produced by the time production was discontinued. The reason for the low success were technical difficulties. The exception was the sludge suction trucks, which later made up a large part of Fowler's production. Because of the short driving distances between the frequent stops, the problems of steam production could be better controlled here. In 1931 Fowler presented the first truck with a diesel engine, a short-nosed truck with a payload of 6/7 tons , and a short time later a three-axle truck with a 10/12 ton payload. The cab and engine did not differ in either model. A self-developed six-cylinder diesel engine with a patented piston shape was used. However, the models were not particularly successful on the market, so that Fowler ceased production of commercial vehicles completely in 1935 and concentrated on the production of agricultural machinery .

In 1947 Fowler merged with Marshall, Sons & Co. from Gainsborough to form Marshall-Fowler Ltd. Vehicles were manufactured in the Fowler factories until 1974.
