Ytterholmen is an island in the Gotland municipality in Gotland County , about 500 m from Sankt Olofsholm on the northeast side of Gotland Island . The island is about 600 m long and about 300 m wide. The highest parts of the island of Ytterholmen are slightly more than 15 m above sea level. In the north and west, the shores of the island are steep and sometimes even form cliff sections. In the south and east the beaches run flat into the water. The island is largely covered by small stones ( Swedish rattles ). Here and there, however, the rocky subsoil appears in the form of irregular reef limestone formations on the surface. There are some tall rockets, especially in the northeast and south . Ytterholmen is a nature reserve of 36 hectares, of which 17 hectares are on land and 19 hectares are water. The nature reserve was established in 1931. The island was a restricted military area until the end of the 1990s.
