Yttrandefrihetsgrundlagen ( YGL - Freedom of Expression Act ) from 1991 is the most recent part of the Swedish constitution . The law came into force on January 1, 1992.

Content (shortened)

  • Every Swedish citizen has the right guaranteed by this law to express his or her thoughts, views and feelings via radio, television or other similar means of transmission such as film, video, sound recordings and the like. express it publicly and provide information of any kind.
  • No authority or state body may request a review of planned publications in the above-mentioned modes of transmission. Cinema films are an exception.
  • The author of a radio or television program or similar has the right to remain anonymous.

The law has some similarities with the Freedom of the Press Act ( Tryckfrihetsförordningen ), but generally does not apply to the written word. In contrast, it includes websites and database systems with a journalistic background.

Misuse of this law is a criminal offense: For example, anyone who calls for violence against humans and animals, or who practices treason or espionage . In such a case, the right to anonymity of the author or the information source also expires .
