Yuanqu xuan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yuanqu xuan元曲 选 (Collected Yuan Arias) is a Yuanqu元曲 collection of one hundred Zaju ( Wade-Giles : tsa-chü; i.e. the pieces of the Zaju Theater) mostly from the time of the Yuan Dynasty (i.e. the time Mongol rule in China), which was compiled by Zang Maoxun 臧 懋 循 (d. 1621) in the time of the Ming dynasty and published in 1615. In addition to works from the Yuan Dynasty, it also includes some from the beginning of the Ming Dynasty. The publishing house Zhonghua shuju published it in 1958 in a modern edition. William Dolby notes in his A History of Chinese Drama :

"Many of the editions he worked upon no doubt contained little or no more than the songs. Nevertheless, he did make them into whole pieces of dramatic literature. Without the activities of Zang and the other late Ming editors our present knowledge of Yuan zaju might have been very sparse indeed, and later Chinese drama would have been deprived of a source of considerable inspiration. "

Yuanqu xuan waibian

A sequel to this, the Yuanqu xuan waibian 元曲 选 外 编, contains other 62 pieces that have been scattered up to then, this collection was not published until 1959, also by Zhonghua shuju .
