Yumi Matsutōya
Yumi Matsutōya ( Japanese 松 任 谷 由 実 , Matsutōya Yumi ; born January 19, 1954 in Hachiōji as Yumi Arai ( 荒 井 由 実 , Arai Yumi )), also called Yuming ( ユ ー ミ ン , Yūmin ), is a Japanese J-pop singer and songwriter .
Life
She was born as Yumi Arai in Hachiōji near Tokyo . In 1972 she made her debut with her single Henji wa Iranai (roughly: "No answer needed"). The following year she brought out her first album Hikōki-gumo ("contrail"). In 1976 she married her producer Masataka Matsutōya and took his family name. The lyrics of her songs are written in Japanese and English.
In the course of her career she has sold around 38 million singles and albums so far. Her most successful album is The Dancing Sun from 1994. Measured by the sales figures, Yumi Matsutōya was the most successful solo artist in Japan until 2001; today it ranks sixth.
As a songwriter, she has written numerous texts for other musicians under the name Karuho Kureda ( 呉 田 軽 穂 , Kureda Karuho ).
