from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yusuf II , with full name Abu al-Hajjaj Yusuf ath-thani ibn Muhammad al-chamis  /أبو الحجاج يوسف الثاني بن محمد الخامس / Abū l-Ḥaǧǧāǧ Yūsuf aṯ-ṯānī b. Muḥammad al-ḫāmis , († October 3, 1392 ) was the eleventh Nasrid emir of Granada .

He was the son of Muhammad V , whose successor as Emir he was after his death in 1391. To prevent his throne from being contested, he had his three brothers arrested and murdered when he ascended the throne. His short reign is marked by the dependence on the Merinids .

During his reign, Yusuf II acted as a peace-loving monarch who was inclined to the arts and sciences. Despite his precautionary measures against a palace revolt, he was overthrown by confidants and courtiers, taken into jail and finally poisoned. His son Muhammad VII succeeded him.
