The face plate is a clamping device for lathes , on which large, heavy or irregularly shaped workpieces are clamped for machining in a vertical or horizontal position. They often have four or six jaws .

The clamping jaws of a faceplate are individually adjustable according to the outline of the workpieces. They are adjusted using threaded spindles . In contrast to this, with a chuck, all clamping jaws are moved at the same time, so they are self-centering. For this purpose, workpieces that are not rotationally symmetrical can be machined on a faceplate. To get a "plan run", i. H. To achieve a symmetrical movement, so-called counterweights are additionally screwed onto the faceplate against any imbalance , similar to the balancing of a wheel rim on a car. Due to the high centrifugal forces and the off-center center of gravity, they may only be operated at a certain speed.

Due to the small spindle pitch of the individual clamping jaws or the use of a power clamping spindle , high clamping forces can be transmitted. The clamping jaws of a faceplate are operated manually and / or hydraulically / pneumatically. Faceplate diameters of up to 12 meters are possible and are used on vertical lathes . Clamping with the conventional lathe on the conventional faceplate is time-consuming because it has to be aligned manually.
