Yutō-yomi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yuto-yomi ( Jap. 湯桶読み ) is a form of reading of Kanji - compound words in the Japanese language . The first part of the word is read in Japanese ( Kunyomi ), the second part in Sino-Japanese ( Onyomi ). The name was derived from the word yutō , which denotes an old Japanese water and sake container, precisely because the characters in this word are read exactly in this form. The opposite case, first On then Kun reading, is called Jūbako-yomi .

Usually compound words are read purely in On-Reading or purely in Kun-Reading, the Yutō-yomi is an exception.
