Jūbako-yomi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A jūbako

The Jūbako-yomi ( Jap. 重箱読み ) is a form of reading of Kanji - compound words in the Japanese language . The first part of the word is read in Sino-Japanese ( Onyomi ), the second part in Japanese ( Kunyomi ). It was named after the word for the historical Japanese food boxes (重 箱, jūbako ), precisely because the characters in this word are read exactly in this form. The opposite case, first Kun then On reading, is called Yutō-yomi , after the word yutō , "water bucket".

Usually compound words are read purely in On-Reading or purely in Kun-Reading, the Jūbako-yomi is an exception.
