Counts per second ( dt. Counts or counts per second ), short cps , is a unit of measurement for the count rate (the average repetition frequency are counted by measuring signals separated as a time-specific events). Analogous to the unit counts per second , the unit counts per minute (cpm) is defined.
use
An event in this sense is usually the registration of a photon , electron or other particle by a particle detector . The unit is commonly used in atomic and nuclear physics and in many applications, e.g. B. X-ray induced photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) as well as used in nuclear medicine .
Demarcation
The unit cps is in principle equivalent to the unit Hertz (Hz); Hz is normally used for periodic processes, whereas cps is used for counting events that are randomly distributed over time (the number of events per unit of time usually fluctuates according to a Poisson distribution ).
