The Zakum oil field is an offshore oil field of the Abu Dhabi Sheikdom , which is 60 km north of the coast in the Persian Gulf, Zakum is one of the largest oil fields in the world. Drilling began in April 1963 on the Zakum One drilling rig. The development is carried out by the Zakum Development Company (ZADCO), a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and the Japan Oil Development Company (JODCO). The extracted oil is transported via pipelines to the loading ports on the islands of Zirku ( Upper Zakum field ) and Das ( Lower Zakum field ) and exported from there.
