Tongue (reptile)

Flickering Komodo dragon ( Varanus komodoensis )

As zuengeln is defined as the repeated sticking out and retracting the bifurcated tongue in a number of Schuppenkriechtieren , for example Waranen or snakes . The tongue picks up odor particles from the air or from surfaces, which are then transported via the split tip of the tongue to the two sensory epitheles of the vomeronasal organ on the roof of the mouth . In addition to the olfactory orientation, flickering can also serve for intra-species communication.
