Zaculeu was a Maya city in present-day Guatemala , near the present-day city of Huehuetenango .

history

Evidence of various construction phases shows that Zaculeu was inhabited since the early classical period (from around 250 to 300 AD). In the post-classical period , the place rose to become a commercial center with connections to Mexico, as indicated by Mexican influences in architecture and the discovery of Mexican luxury goods. Around 1250 Zaculeu became the capital of the Mam -Maya who controlled the place until the sixteenth century.

In 1525 the Spaniard Pedro de Alvarado conquered the city and drove out its inhabitants, whose descendants still live to a large extent in and around Huehuetenango.
