The Zaghe are a dynasty of the West African Gao or Songhay Empire , which is attested by the inscriptions on the steles of Gao-Saney .

According to recent research, the Zaghe were driven out of Ghana in 1087 and then established themselves in Gao-Saney , the North African trading town of Gao on the eastern Niger knee. According to this research, the Zaghe are identical to the Za (also: Dia ) of the two chronicles of Timbuktu , the Tarikh al-Sudan and the Tarikh al-Fattash . As such, they ruled as independent kings until 1300 and then as dependent kings of Mali until 1430. Their successors were the Sonni .
