Johann Michael Neder (born April 29, 1807 in Vienna ; † September 30, 1882 there ), known as the “cobbler painter , was an Austrian painter .

Life

Neder was born in the Vienna suburb of Oberdöbling No. 100 (today Döblinger Hauptstraße 73) as the son of master shoemaker Johann Michael Neder and his wife Maria Anna Hengl. After learning the shoemaker's craft from his father, Neder's artistic talent was recognized, and he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1821 to 1829 , where he was a student of Karl Gsellhofer . In 1826 he received the Czernin Prize . In 1830 he exhibited at the academy for the first time. Since he had doubts about his artistic talent, he gave up painting in the same year and worked again as a shoemaker.

Encouraged by Moritz Daffinger and Friedrich Gauermann , Neder turned back to art in 1834. In 1834/35 he made a trip to Salzburg and the Berchtesgadener Land and stayed in Kremsmünster for a long time . In 1848 during the Revolution , Neder was a lieutenant in the National Guard. He continued to live in modest circumstances in Vienna, only interrupted by brief stays in Prague and Budapest in the 1950s. From 1861–1875 he at least owned a house in Sievering. Neder died in Obersievering, Hauptstrasse 35 (today Sieveringer Strasse next to No. 233); the house no longer exists today. He was given a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery . In 1910 the Nedergasse in Vienna- Döbling was named in his honor .

power

Johann Michael Neder was a folk painter of the Viennese Biedermeier period , who created portraits and genre scenes from the life of the Viennese suburbs in a naive-realistic manner . Aside from artificial romanticism , the painter, who was controversial during his lifetime, is today an important portrayal of the Viennese petty bourgeoisie, which, in addition to his artistic qualities, can also claim a documentary interest of his time, precisely because of his authenticity.

Neder's work was honored in 2013/14 in the special exhibition “Michael Neder - Without Compromise” at the Belvedere in Vienna .
