By a tooth shade determination , even shade taking is from the dentist or dental technician individual tooth color of a patient determined. This is done, for example, in order to produce dentures that are color-coordinated with the other teeth of a patient or to follow the color development in the context of a tooth whitening .

The conventional color determination takes place with the help of so-called color rings or scales, which are provided with color samples and are used for visual color comparison . The composition of the color samples traditionally corresponds to the tooth colors most frequently occurring in nature, which have been determined empirically.

In 1998 a system was introduced that enables systematic shade determination and evenly covers the entire natural tooth color space. With the appropriate color scales, the basic tooth color is determined step-by-step according to the three color dimensions of brightness , color intensity and hue , which determine the human color impression. Furthermore, the tooth color can now be determined with optoelectronic color measuring devices , for example spectrophotometers .

Both the conventional, so-called subjective-visual tooth shade determination and the objectified tooth shade measurement are influenced by many factors. The systematic exploration of the complex interaction of various influencing factors, effects and phenomena on the development and determination of dental shade is currently the basis of intensive scientific research.
